The house was built in the 1960’s, but we don’t have the exact year. Now, this is a tricky business when you want to do renovations. In SA if a house is over 60 years old it becomes a heritage site and you need to get special permissions for renovations from the board.
The servants quarters were built in the 1950’s. It is not clear when the garage was built. The patio was added either in 1999 or 2000.
The house is situated in the richly treed suburb of Bramley and boasts with a stand size of 1994 square meters, split level lounge and dining room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one on suite on the main bedroom), double garage and other outbuildings. I will elaborate more on the details of each room on the various pages. I have created a page for each room or area in the house and I will do the same for the garden.
There are also plans available for considerable loft extension onto the very high pitched roof. We are considering this option, but would prefer to move our bedroom upstairs with our own private lounge or a second bedroom.
There is no pool, but we will consider building a “Hollywood” overflow infinity pool at some stage.
The garden is massive in today’s terms in Johannesburg. These days just about everyone we know is living cooped up in townhouse. The ground slopes down with the house at the top, but I am sure there is lots we can do with the garden over time.
